Mutemath "Odd Soul" Review

I am an odd soul, aren't I? "Odd Souls" is the perfect name for the third studio album by alternative band Mutemath. It's different, or "odd" as you might say. But in the best way possible. The follow up to 2009's breakout success "Armistice" continues the bands amazing experimental rock sound, that is always improving. The album features a diverse sound with great vocals and instrumentation on each track. Something about lead singer Paul Meany's lead vocals are simply captivating, as howls in frustration on tracks such as "Heads up" where he sings "tell your heart heads up!" The album is a strong entry into MM's catalog of music.

The album begins with the title track of the album, "Odd Soul". This is my favorite song on the album. The vocals and lyrics on this song are just stellar, and I love the band is embracing the fact that some people think their sound is strange, but all they have to say is "hey,I'm an odd soul".

Other favorites on the album include "Prytania", which really showcases Meany's vocal talent, "Blood Pressure", which tells a story of how not being good enough just leads to blood pressure rising, "Allies", which features a really cool drum beat and chord progression on the guitar, and "Walking Paranoia".

Although Mutemath is not a "Christian" band, you can definitely hear the influence of religion on some of the tracks on the album, such as where Jesus is mentioned in the songs "Blood Pressure" and "Walking Paranoia". The members of the band are Christians, but they remain adamant that their music is for "everyone" and shouldn't just be marketed to Christian audiences.

There are no bad songs on "Odd Soul", although I am not a huge fan of "Quarantine" or "All or Nothing". This is everything I could have wanted in the album, as I just recently started hyping the album after listening to the first 2 M.M. albums. "Backfire" remains my all time favorite still, but there are plenty of new favorites from "Odd Soul". I hope this helps you guys in your decision on whether or not to purchase the album when it drops in stores and on iTunes on October 4th.

94/100
